Brainwave Entrainment: What It Is—and What We Actually Know
Brainwave entrainment is the idea that rhythmic sensory stimulation can influence neural oscillatory activity. In consumer meditation products, sound-based approaches such as binaural, monaural and isochronic stimulation are common.
What is a binaural beat?
A binaural beat is an auditory percept created when slightly different tones are presented separately to each ear. The perceived beat frequency corresponds to the difference between the tones. This is one reason stereo headphones are central to classic binaural-beat setups.
Does the brain literally “sync” to the beat?
The evidence is not settled. A 2023 systematic review of 14 studies examining EEG responses found inconsistent outcomes: some supported the entrainment hypothesis, more reported contradictory findings, and one was mixed. The authors emphasized substantial methodological heterogeneity.
What about attention, memory or anxiety?
Some reviews report promising effects in selected contexts. A 2023 meta-analysis found a medium overall effect across memory and attention outcomes but also noted conflicting results. A 2026 review of music and binaural-beat interventions in young adults reported possible benefits across several domains while warning that small samples and heterogeneous designs limit certainty.
How commercial systems differ
Products differ in session design, carrier frequencies, guidance, music, progression, support, intended use and whether they combine several entrainment methods. Compare the actual program structure rather than assuming all “brainwave audio” is equivalent.
